des moines metropolitan center for the arts This state-of-the-art performing arts venue will serve as a shared home for Greater Des Moines’ diverse cultural and performing arts organizations. Designed to foster artistic excellence and collaboration, the Des Moines Metropolitan Center for the Arts will unite performance, recital, rehearsal, education, and administrative functions within a single integrated campus while strengthening the region’s arts, economy, and civic identity. The historic Municipal Building will be repurposed for several exceptional recital, rehearsal, event, educational, and administrative spaces that will support and enhance current performing arts programs across the region. Originally envisioned as the symbolic heart of an open and accessible government, the historic Municipal Building’s Great Hall will once again serve as the region’s largest and most richly detailed civic gathering space. A new state-of-the-art theater with flexible seating strategies will provide an intimate and engaging experience for audiences of 800-1,200 on the adjacent vacant property. The campus provides an opportunity to address the community’s current cultural needs and revive the original civic intention of the Municipal Building, which was deliberately oriented toward the river in keeping with the principles of the early 20th-century City Beautiful Movement and its relationship to the city’s riverfront civic landmarks.
